I’m not terribly big on chain burger joints.. I tend to like diners and dives for burgers. Dana mentioned SmashBurger to me and it sounded interesting enough so we stopped by one afternoon while out xmas shopping.
Upon entering it was obvious that it was not a fast food joint nor was it one of those gay ass “TGI Crapplebee’s” sort of places either… thank gawd. It had a modern design sort of feel….almost like an IKEA… No drive-thru, no clowns or mascots, no play room with those snot and slobber infested ball pits… No blockbuster movie themed kids meals…..Just stripped down, minimal decor and the smell of beef. Count me in.
After grabbing a table it took me about 10 seconds to see what I wanted…. JALAPEÑO BBQ burger with layers of melted cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, grilled garlic jalapeños, haystack onions and BBQ sauce on an egg bun…I’m not too big on bbq sauce on a burger.. but all I saw was “jalapeno” and was sold… And of course the “Smashfries” which are tossed with rosemary, olive oil and garlic. Yes, please.
Dana ordered the “Classic” with American cheese, ketchup, leaf lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, and our smash sauce on an egg bun and an order of “Haystack Onions”… Then I added an order of “Fried Pickels”…because…. well, why the hell not?
I’m not gunna go on and on about the service or the damned bathrooms… You go order at the counter then they bring your food out.
Simply put… very decent burger. The egg bun was soft on the outside and slightly toasted on the inside.. The burgers are 100% Angus beef and cooked to order. The cheese is higher quality than those slabs of yellow rubber that most places use. The “Smashfries” were a little too oily for my taste…but I’m always a sucker for rosemary and sea salt….The fried pickles were O.K….as were the “haystack onion rings”. I wasn’t personally blown away by the sides but the burgers were certainly decent.
Very decent joint for a burger… Not really any more expensive than those shitty fast food places…. Burgers are generally in the $5-$7 range plus they have beer and wine! Great “adult” burger chain with much better food than one might expect.
